Background
Yarra Trams operate Melbourne’s extensive tram network – the largest urban tram system in the world – covering 250 kilometres of double track across 24 routes, with a fleet of almost 500 trams.
To keep more than 5,000 services a day running safely and efficiently, tram infrastructure like tracks, overhead, and power supply requires constant maintenance.
Sand is applied to tram tracks to improve traction, particularly in wet or slippery conditions. As a result, street sweepers are an essential part of Yarra Trams’ maintenance program, removing excess sand and debris to keep the tracks clean and safe.
With a continued focus on the safety of staff and passengers, Yarra Trams worked proactively to address and mitigate the potential risk of silica dust exposure during track maintenance.

Testing
To assess and mitigate potential risks of silica exposure, Yarra Trams engaged independent contractors to complete air quality testing during routine sweeping using Schwarze G6 regenerative air street sweepers.
During testing, contactors collected and analysed air samples to determine the presence and concentration of airborne particles in the open environment.
Outcome
Yarra Trams and KOR worked together to improve how sweeping is undertaken across Melbourne’s network and help keep services on track.
Using Schwarze G6 sweepers significantly minimised dust emissions through the closed-loop regenerative air system, reducing exposure to airborne particles.
Wet sweeping is significantly more effective in cleaning excess sand and debris – high pressure jets were used to make it easier to clear tracks. The regenerative air sweeper high-efficiency fan and controlled suction system collected the excess sand and debris, removing it from the open air.
The testing results indicated no significant health risks to employees operating the Schwarze G6 sweepers. Consequently, there was no requirement for additional personal protective equipment (PPE) beyond standard safety gear.

Conclusion
Yarra Trams and KOR’s partnership has helped improve safety and delivered a more efficient track maintenance program – working to keep services running smoothly with a solution fit for Melbourne’s tram network.
This collaboration using Schwarze GS6 regenerative air sweepers has helped:
- Reduce risk of silica dust exposure to operators via regenerative air system
- Address operational challenges of sand and debris build up on tram tracks
- Improved tram traction and reduced maintenance-related disruptions
- Deliver a solution focusing on safety of staff and passengers, while working to keep services moving
