Challenge: Meeting Growing Demand Across Remote and Technically Demanding Industrial Projects
As workloads increased across the Pilbara, so did the complexity of the work. GSD WA was undertaking projects that extended beyond routine vacuum loading. Marine tank cleaning, mining shutdowns, confined space work and hazardous waste recovery all demanded equipment capable of performing consistently under challenging conditions.
Many projects required more than 100 metres of 6-inch vacuum hose to reach confined work areas. One mining shutdown involved extracting iron ore with 1.5 specific gravity, through a 135-metre hose, on a gradual incline. Other projects included removing synthetic drilling mud with 1.3 specific gravity from offshore supply vessels.
These applications leave no margin for equipment that cannot perform reliably. Maintaining production schedules, meeting client expectations and working safely all depend on machinery that can deliver consistent results in remote operating environments.
Solution: Investing in Cappellotto Equipment and a Long-Term Partnership with KOR
In 2025, GSD WA invested in its first Cappellotto CAP VAC 3200 CVI 10×4 with KOR and as demand continued to grow and the equipment proved itself in the field, the business purchased a second CAP VAC 3200 CVI 10×4 in 2026.
For Director of GSD WA, Scott Collins, the decisions were from experience.
“I started my career nearly 28 years ago as an operator on a heavy industrial vacuum truck. I’ve spent my entire career around vacuum extraction and know exactly what these machines are expected to do in the real world. The Cappellotto units have genuinely impressed me. The value of the investment has been demonstrated across demanding industrial applications throughout Western Australia. During mining shutdowns, the Cappellotto fleet has been used to recover heavy iron ore from underground conveyor galleries and transfer tunnels.
Scott Collins added:
“Out of every vacuum truck in our fleet, the Cappellotto was the unit capable of consistently delivering that performance. “It wasn’t simply about moving product. It was about maintaining production, keeping shutdown schedules on track and providing our clients with confidence that the work would be completed safely and efficiently.”
The equipment has also supported critical marine infrastructure projects. Working alongside Globe Construction at Pilbara Ports in Dampier, GSD WA vacuum extracted approximately 18 to 20 kL of seawater from 18-metre-deep steel pile casings during a major berth upgrade.
Operating within strict tidal windows, marine safety requirements and continuous 24-hour construction schedules, the project highlighted the versatility of the Cappellotto units in demanding marine environments.
